Tutor Profile

James.

A First-Class Honours graduate in MChem Chemistry from the prestigious University of Oxford, James strikes a rare balance as both an accomplished scholar and a tutor who makes complex ideas feel straightforward.

His flawless academic foundation (A* in Mathematics, Chemistry and Physics at A level) was followed by a succession of prizes at Oxford, including the Downs Prize for best overall performance in Chemistry, the Shimadzu Prize for excellence in practical Chemistry, and an Academic Scholarship recognising his outstanding examination results in his first three years.

Committed to helping his students achieve at the highest level, James combines his passion for tutoring with the advanced subject knowledge gained from his PhD in Physical and Theoretical Chemistry at Oxford, which he is currently completing.

Tutoring Experience

James began tutoring in 2019, working with students from KS3 through to A level across all major exam boards. He has supported learners of different ages and backgrounds, helping them to build confidence, strengthen understanding, and reach their academic goals.

In addition to his private tutoring, James has also taught within the University of Oxford, where he delivered workshops and provided detailed marking and feedback on weekly tutorial work for first-year Biochemistry undergraduates. This experience gave him first-hand insight into the expectations of top-tier institutions, which he now brings into his tutoring practice.

James’s teaching style lays a strong foundation in scientific understanding and problem-solving, then builds on it with exam technique and targeted practice to help turn knowledge into outstanding results.

What families say

James has been an absolute boon for my daughter's Maths and Chemistry. He is a patient, insightful tutor who is always able to find the right explanation. His creativity in style and flexibility in thought to match hers has been refreshing, and he has inspired her to aim for more. The results have been undeniable, with her going from a 6 to an 8 in her Maths, and a 7/6 to a 9/8 in her Chemistry. We couldn’t be happier with the results!

I have come on leaps and bounds in my Chemistry. James is always able to approach areas of difficulty for me with the right level of content to keep me both improving, and genuinely passionate for the subject. It has been a pleasure to begin to really enjoy Chemistry too! My predicted grade has stayed at a consistent A* since we started, and I am incredibly pleased!

My son improved greatly in Maths once he started with James. As someone far more inclined to humanities, James was able to leverage this into improving his Maths. He began to see Maths less of a chore, and more as a subject that he genuinely wanted to do well in, and take an interest in for its own merits. James was able to solidify my son’s mathematical skills, securing him a place at Cambridge. We are phenomenally grateful to James.

My son's approach to maths has completely transformed, and rather than being intimidated by unfamiliar problems, James has taught him to come at them with a reasoned and collected manner, that all problems have a solution, and that he should see what he learns as tools that he can use, rather than procedures he should carry out mindlessly. This has overhauled his ability, and he could achieve grades we didn’t think possible.
